Welcome to our new digs!

After weeks of discussions and research...

The Sardis Kiwanis Club is excited to announce we have changed locations for breakfast. We are now meeting every Tuesday morning at 7am at the IHOP on 45466 Yale Road.
Today we were very fortunate to welcome Barb from the Chilliwack Youth Health Centre (CYHC) and members of the executive from the Sardis Secondary Key Club.
The CYHC's vision is to: To create a space that provides integrated health and wellness services to youth and young adults (ages 12-26) on a drop in basis in a safe and supportive environment. They offer a diverse number of programs to support the full range of youth health issues. These include but are not limited to life planning, mental health awareness, counseling, substance abuse and many other concerns youth may have in the lives. Barb outlined how our previous support has allowed them to offer more times, more sessions and more awareness so the youth of Chilliwack have a safe place to go. To check out a full outline of their programs and offerings check out there website here (http://chilliwackyhc.com/). We were also invited to their annual fundraising gala on April 18 at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre. Please contact their office if you are interested in attending.

Our second visitors of the morning were a stellar group of Sardis Secondary students, fresh in with some updates from their fundraising efforts on the weekend, and an overall update about their club.

The club at Sardis are working on school culture events, organizing a team for the Inside Ride at WJ Mouat and organizing a thank you party for May. We also learned their fundraiser of bagging groceries on Saturday earned more than $2400 for KCCP and their programs. An amazing accomplishment! Check out our Facebook page for a few photos from the day.

It's pretty easy to get excited about the future when we see what our youth of today are accomplishing! Thank you to our Key Clubs for continuing all the amazing work of the Kiwanis family.
Other club updates from today include:
  • Thank you to the House committee for all their work on changing locations.
  • Plowing Match for April 14 has been POSTPONED due to the condition of the fields, stay tuned for the re-scheduled date.
  • Bahath fundraiser in on April 17, we have two tables attending

Program:
One of the Kiwanis madates is YCPO, which stands for 'Young Children Priority One', we had the privilege of welcoming Mary Ives from a branch of CYC, and Effective Parenting. She came with a celebration of 20 years of support and partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Sardis and to talk to us about their programs here in Chilliwack. One program that she showcased was the Circle of Security. Circle of Security is relationship based parenting program developed by clinical professionals over a period of 20 years. It provides parents with a roadmap to understanding their children’s needs as well as a guide on how to get there. It is practical, understandable and portioned out in bite-size chunks. The method minimizes the shame and blame cycle and teaches parents reflective functioning. Building on strengths without ignoring the struggles. Circle of Security® trained  facilitators are  leading this series.

The 8 week program will take place 9:00am – 11:00am at Sardis Family Place. Childcare is provided.
Her presentation was followed by some great questions! We are very fortunate to have such a service here in Chilliwack.

Welcome to the New Year and I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season!
We celebrated the birthdays of George and Ev, as well as Barb M, double celebrations all around for them and their families!
We had updates from ORN- do not forget the volunteer reception on January 11, and Super Reader, Arley has a list of assemblies that are already booked. Sheila is getting information on the Salvation Army food sort. A reminder we have our January Board Meeting at the Chilliwack Library at 7pm!
A note of rememberance, Valerie Tunbridge, long-time Chilliwack Kiwanian, passed away over the holiday season. When we get details of the service, we will let you know.

Today, our guest speakers were Dr. Rob Lees and Dr. Melanie Maddill from Chilliwack Youth Health Centre. We supported them last year, helping to purchase medical practice calibre computers. This allowed them to be self-sufficient away from their main practices. We also CYHC also now provides full clincial counselling, making them even more connected to our youth in crisis in Chilliwack. Both Dr. Maddill and Dr. Lees agreed, youth mental health, especially in the areas of anxiety and depression are the most in need. They talked about a documentary showing on January 24 called Screenagers (click the title to open the link to watch the trailer), maybe something some of us may want to catch. Dr. Lees also outlined a new initiative, HeadSpace, a travelling counselling service, CYHC hopes to get off the ground. I know I look forward to hearing more about all their initiatives and programs, hopefully we can support them more in the future.

A note, the GW Graham Bottle Drive scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled! To be rescheduled at a later date, when it's warmer. However, they do have an account set up at the Sardis Bottle Depot. When you return your recyclables there, you can ask to credit account #123 to help out the Key Club.

Till tonight, and next week, stay warm and stay safe,

Michelle
