"Alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much."
~Helen Keller

Happy Halloween everyone! It is not too often we get Halloween on a Tuesday but this is our year and the challenge was issued!
Look at this good looking crew!

Updates from the floor today included: correspondence from the Salvation Army, the Canadian Foundation, ORN update, Food Safe certification update, and a reminder that Key Club will be in attendance next week. Additionally, not only was it Halloween, and a costume extravaganza, but we also had a few awards and the installation of our newest member. It was a great meeting to relax and reconnect with our fellow members.

"There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up."
~John Holmes

This morning we welcomed guest, Don Armstrong from the Salvation Army. He brought us updates from the Food Bank and Christmas hamper drive. We also learned how this year was extremely taxing on volunteers and services with all of the forest fires that blazed across our province. We also learned that they are working on building a new temporary shelter to help those homeless individuals during the winter months.
The Chilliwack Salvation Army anticipates 1700 hampers will be distributed and the problem is that currently, the shelves are bare. They are trying a new fundraising campaign, and the hope is that we can provide some extra assistance this year in getting those shelves filled. In addition, there will still be the Adopt-A-Family that will happen this year for another 250 families.
Clearly there is a lot of need in Chilliwack!
Hopefully, we can put our minds together and help get something organized to relieve the burden a bit.
Updates from Committees and the Floor:
  • We welcomed Larry, a potential new member and friend of Kiwanis! He is a member of the road warriors and we look forward to his friendship and dedication through this new year.
  • Operation Red Nose - a new to us weekend has been added, we are adjusting our calendars appropriately.
  • Awards Night is October 12 at the Cheam Golf Course. $30 per person at the door or in advance to Michelle 5:30 Mingler, 6:15pm Dinner. Please let Michelle know if you are attending so we can plan accordingly.
  • Super Reader - 12 schools involved for this year. Arley is going away on vacation, Doug is looking after it all. Thank you Doug! Also happy to report, left over French shirts are going to make a trip across the pond to Africa and Haiti.
  • Bahath Centre - Calendars for sale $15 each.
  • Also shared a thank you card we received from the YMCA.
  • Lt.G - InterClub opportunities coming up next week, Lynden and Golden Ears. Let Dennis know if you can join him.

Wrapped it all up with Happy Bucks and warm wishes to George and Fran and Ken and Anne who celebrate their anniversaries this week!

PictureA celebration of last year, to kick off this year!

"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give!"
~Sir Winston Churchill

Well here we go!
Another awesome Kiwanis year has begun and I am excited to be leading us again this year! This year's Board has some new ideas and we are so lucky to be the home club of our Lt. Governor, it is bound to be a wonderful adventure filled year!
At the meeting this morning we also welcomed back Mike from ICBC. It is always nice to get updates from ICBC, especially with Operation Red Nose starting to gear up for the 2017 campaign. We got some insight into the lack of policing and the effects of an increased speed limit on Highway 1. Ironically, he noted that with all the road construction that has been occurring in the Lower Mainland accidents and deaths due to speed are all down. However, fraud has gone up, way up. All increasing our premiums of course!

Updates from Committees and the Floor:
  • Operation Red Nose - a new to us weekend has been added, we are adjusting our calendars appropriately.
  • Awards Night is October 12 at the Cheam Golf Course. $30 per person at the door or in advance to Michelle 5:30 Mingler, 6:15pm Dinner.
  • Super Reader - 12 schools involved for this year.
  • Bahath Centre - Calendars for sale $15 each.
  • Lt.G - All Installations are done, a huge Thank you to Pat who attended 8/9 with Dennis!
We wrapped the whole thing up with a round of Happy Bucks! Make it a great week and Happy Thanksgiving!
