"Don't let yesterday take up too much of today."
~Mr. Fred Rogers

A typical chilly, wet, grey type of Chilliwack morning!

It was a calm in house meeting was up for this morning. Dennis had a slideshow from his trip to Panama, which looked incredible and warm! And we did updates and enjoyed a few good laughs!

Updates include:
  • Trailer is out for the first time this season April 1st for the plowing match, there was a sign up sheet that went around, if you can help out, contact George.
  • Arley handed out a whole list of new Super Reader dates for the month of April. If you are available, let Arley know.
  • Barry D. informed us that the Planning Committee for Canada Day has started meeting, so details about the Pancake breakfast and our involvement will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.
  • Michelle invited everyone to come watch a field hockey game with her senior girls playing a team from Alberta on Sunday April 9 at 10:30am (ish) at Townsend Turf
  • Sheila got the final numbers from Santa Shuffle (the Salvation Army food bank Christmas fundraiser) a total of $3308.50 was raised in its first year, so very promising for this coming year.
  • Regional Conference is April 8 in Mount Vernon, there are 3 of us going, let Michelle know if you are interested in attending.
  • April Board Meeting is set for April 4, 7pm at the Chilliwack Public library.
  • The Golden Ears 150th Birthday Bash was a great night for all who attended, we even heard that Barry and Mary won stuff!
  • Also GW Graham Key Club is still taking bottle donations at the Sardis Bottle Depot under account #123, so if you able to help their efforts, it is greatly appreciated
We wrapped it all together with Happy Bucks and we are off to make the week great again! Be sure to check out our Instagram feed!

Yours in Kiwanis,

Michelle

"Wisdom means to choose now what will make sense later."
~Tracee Ross

Top of the morning to everyone today!
Today we celebrated no snow, Barry's return, and Erwin's fête!
Peter B gave us an update about scholarships from Monday night, Wednesday night we meet again to do our second school. Arley W is gearing up with Super Reader again, Friday March 24 is Mt. Cheam, I believe Arley has people to help for that day! Stay tuned though, post- Spring Break busy is coming quickly and we will need all hands on deck. A reminder about the Golden Ears fundraiser on Saturday March 25 at the Maple Ridge legion, Dennis is looking for one more member to join them to make the festivity an interclub too- Talk to him if you are interested in attending.
Also the Regional Conference is April 8, please let me know if you are interested in attending, we have 3 thus far and we need to get our paperwork in soon!
Barry B. also gave a run down of his vacation- what a time, he brought back a fundraiser he came across, the picture is below- what a great idea! Does someone have a greenhouse?

Finally, our guest speaker today was Lucy Fraser from Chilliwack Hospice. She came with updates about the services Chilliwack Hospice provides our great community. There are partnerships growing with the First Nations communities, and those networks are proving to be beneficial. Of note, it's nice to hear that their services are being brought into the schools and that AD Rundle has started a grief and loss support group. They have also diversified their assistance programs, and offer cooking classes, bereavement support, grief counselling and suicide counselling to name a few. It was my pleasure to present a cheque to Lucy to help support the continuation of the services Chilliwack Hospice provides.

We wrapped up with Happy Bucks and best wishes for the best of week!
Don't forget to follow us on Instagram @fvekiwanis and give us a Like if you are on Facebook at Kiwanis Clubs of Chilliwack and Sardis!

What a morning! Pie Day and Everything!

We had a full house, even if our guest speaker had to cancel late last night! We were so lucky to have Greg Weigrich our Lieutenant Governor, Mary, Anne, Brenda (from Run for Mom), and Bill Tunbridge (Chilliwack Club) join us this morning for breakfast and a celebration!
We were honoured to welcome Doug and Kiefer into the club officially! Greg our Lt. Govenor did the ceremony!
Certificates, pins, reading material were all presented to these fine gentleman, and I know I speak for the club when I say I look forward to working with them in making our community better, one child at a time.
Thank you Greg for doing our ceremony this morning and thank you Gentlemen for your committment to Kiwanis!
Immediately after our newest members joined, I noticed it got a little dusty in the room.
"The difference between a broken community and a thriving one is the presence of women who are valued." (MIchelle Obama)
With having so many of our wonderful members gathered meant I was finally able to present two deserving ladies with a surprise.
A few weeks back, (thank you to Cec for passing along the information) I nominated both  Sheila and Anne for the Ann Davis Transition Society, Bread and Roses event- to recognize them for their years of tireless community efforts across many different organizations. Both women will be celebrated on April 13th at the Lynnwood Residence at the annual Bread and Roses celebration. Tickets are available ($30ea) till March 24th at the Ann Davis Transition Society office.
Well deserved Ladies! And thank you for all you do!

Bill Tunbridge, husband to Valerie Tunbridge paid us a visit today to personally thank us for the donation in Valerie's memory to the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Foundation.
Bill brought amazing memories of Valerie's causes and passions, as well as some of her accolades to the meeting and we all got a chance to reflect and remember a very special woman.
Valerie was indeed a force, and we share in your sorrow Bill- she is missed immensely. Thank you for taking the time today to share the memories with us, it was a wonderful tribute to a wonderful lady.

Then we had just our updates:
  • DCM was in Sumas on March 13, 2017 - always nice to catch up with other clubs in our District, a brief outline of the meeting was discussed with special attention to Greg Holland, Past-governor being the guest speaker.
  • We had our Board Meeting last week
  • Soup kitchen this past Saturday served 162 meals
  • Super Reader is all quiet with Spring Break for the next two weeks
  • Ba'hath Fundraiser on April 10, we have 2 tables and will be presenting a cheque that night, we are all looking forward to it!
  • Golden Ears is having a fundraiser party to celebrate Canada's 150 birthday on March 25th at the Maple Ridge legion- contact Dennis if you are interested in attending.
  • Brenda from Run for Mom spoke briefly to remind us that Run for Mom is on May 13th this year, a Saturday and was hoping we are in again to support this venture, Pete assured us, we are!
  • A sign-up went around for Reginal Conference on April 8 in Mount Vernon! I will be going, I hope some of you will join me!
  • If you did not get a chance to check out Facebook, between the Chilliwack and Abbotsford IHOP, just over $25,000 was raised for the Children's Hospital so thank you to all our members who helped out that day! What an accomplishment!

And then we wrapped with a little diddy (or 2, or was it 3) from Peter, for Pete to help him prepare for St. Patrick's Day on Friday, but also to return Bud the Spud to him.

Never a dull moment in the Sardis Kiwanis Club!

We ended with laughter and fun! An amazing meeting all around, and thank you for all you do!
See you all soon, Yours in Service,

                                                                                                          Michelle

"Keep your face always towards the sunshine- and the shadows will fall behind you."
~Walt Whitman

It feels like we are coming up on another busy season!
 Happy Pancake Day!
Shout out to all our Kiwanians headed to IHOP today! Thank you!

This morning we had Kyla from Sears Optical speak to us about the OneSight (Click the link for more details) program. "With your support, OneSight brings vision care to people across the globe by mobilizing eye care professionals, industry experts, volunteers, and partners. Our shared passion for giving the best care to every patient is what sets us apart. We hold ourselves to the highest standard of care no matter where in the world we are working. This means that patients receive comprehensive eye exams and new, top-quality eyewear that allows them to see, look, and feel their best. Because each community is different, we develop solutions customized to meet local needs. Patients then walk away empowered to give their best to families, employers and communities."
Personally, I was unaware of this program, and I am so thankful Kyla came to share her stories and experiences. We also learned that she collects old glasses for us so we can donate them back to the S.O.S program (Click the link for more details). This is a wonderful partnership! Thank you Kyla for your passion and for sharing your stories and program with us!
