Welcome to our new digs!

After weeks of discussions and research...

The Sardis Kiwanis Club is excited to announce we have changed locations for breakfast. We are now meeting every Tuesday morning at 7am at the IHOP on 45466 Yale Road.
Today we were very fortunate to welcome Barb from the Chilliwack Youth Health Centre (CYHC) and members of the executive from the Sardis Secondary Key Club.
The CYHC's vision is to: To create a space that provides integrated health and wellness services to youth and young adults (ages 12-26) on a drop in basis in a safe and supportive environment. They offer a diverse number of programs to support the full range of youth health issues. These include but are not limited to life planning, mental health awareness, counseling, substance abuse and many other concerns youth may have in the lives. Barb outlined how our previous support has allowed them to offer more times, more sessions and more awareness so the youth of Chilliwack have a safe place to go. To check out a full outline of their programs and offerings check out there website here (http://chilliwackyhc.com/). We were also invited to their annual fundraising gala on April 18 at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre. Please contact their office if you are interested in attending.

Our second visitors of the morning were a stellar group of Sardis Secondary students, fresh in with some updates from their fundraising efforts on the weekend, and an overall update about their club.

The club at Sardis are working on school culture events, organizing a team for the Inside Ride at WJ Mouat and organizing a thank you party for May. We also learned their fundraiser of bagging groceries on Saturday earned more than $2400 for KCCP and their programs. An amazing accomplishment! Check out our Facebook page for a few photos from the day.

It's pretty easy to get excited about the future when we see what our youth of today are accomplishing! Thank you to our Key Clubs for continuing all the amazing work of the Kiwanis family.
Other club updates from today include:
  • Thank you to the House committee for all their work on changing locations.
  • Plowing Match for April 14 has been POSTPONED due to the condition of the fields, stay tuned for the re-scheduled date.
  • Bahath fundraiser in on April 17, we have two tables attending
  • Inside Ride at WJ Mouat is on April 18 @1pm, carpools are being organized
  • Soup Kitchen needs help 8:30-10:30 on Saturday April 14, contact Sheila if you are available.
  • Scholarships are done, and students have been selected for another year. Thank you to our members who are attending grad ceremonies to hand these out. Also thank you to all those members that sat on the committee this year to select our recipients.
  • Do not forget Club Elections are on May 1, 2018
  • Still a few seats available for Food Safe certification on May 20, contact Doug H as soon as possible if you are interested.
  • Walk and Knock, for the Food Bank is May 2, 5:30-8, mark it in your calendars.
  • McDonald's Day is also May 2, 9am to 7pm.
We finished the morning with Happy Bucks and a few great laughs! As always, if there is anything else, just send me an email, drop me a phone call or text me and I will get it added to our agenda.

Thank you for all you do!
Yours in Service,
Michelle

We had two speaking groups this morning, both super important!
Our first group of speakers were the inspiring Betty, Melinda and Dorothy from Special Olympics. They came in preparation of July 1st and our Pancake Breakfast. The Chilliwack region plays host to approximately 90 athletes and 32 coaches. Bonnie and Melinda came showing off a small bit of their hardware and to update us on all the accomplishments of local athletes are achieving at Regionals, Provincials, Nationals and Worlds!
They also came in celebrating the Sardis Kiwanis Clubs 36 year relationship with Special Olympics in Chilliwack! A special shout out from our lovely ladies went out to Jacques and Brian!
We are super excited to see everyone again on Saturday for the annual Canada Day Pancake Breakfast! Keep up the awesome ladies!
Our second guest of the morning was Sue Attrill, City of Chilliwack counsellor and Executive Director of the Chilliwack Hospice Society!
Sue's first update to us was about the events and going-ons with Hospice. They have purchased a new building as they have outgrown their current residence. Hospice has also been working hard to make sure grief counselling and supports are in place for all age demographics. Sue reminded us of the Hospice's gala event on Spetember 16 at the old Ag Rec and she hopes to see some of us there. Sue was then extra awesome and gave us a quick update about the City and it's workings as well as taking questions. Things like the Garrison development, homelessness, Vedder expansion, and the new bridge were all discussed. Without a doubt, Chilliwack is growing!
From there we had our club updates which included:
  • A brief update from Arley about Super Reader
  • A reminder the Board Meeting is this Tuesday at 7pm
  • Peter had thank you letters and cards from our scholarhip receipents
  • Ev brought a beautiful, thoughtful card from Sardis Doorway to share
  • Canada Day events- Friday set-up 6pm at the Evergreen Hall, 6:30am Saturday for the main event at Evergreen Hall, and all day with the trailer at Townsend
  • Do't forget that our Conference is coming up in Kennewick! Register now!
We wrapped it all up with Happy Bucks!
Happy Birthday to Fran H. this week and Happy Anniversary to the Brelands this week too!
Till next week!

  • Our deepest sympathies and thoughts of strength  to the family and friends of Marv Johnston, I never knew the man but from the stories, he will be deeply missed.
Our program today was Matthew Francis from the Chilliwack Museum, and he came fully prepared, just ask Erwin who won a beautiful copy of "The Chilliwack Story". We also all got passes to the museum (share it with your family) and learned about all their educational programs they offer to the schools and to the public. Matthew also told stories about Chilliwack and some little snippets of her glorious history. We also learned that Mr. Parker is a archive volunteer.
Who knew the Chilliwack Museum was so action packed! It was great to hear how the Chilliwack Museum also secured some of the Canada 150 grant money to begin the process of getting proper museum showcases. Clearly, there is a little gem sitting in down town Chilliwack! Hopefully, we can work on some partnerships and help share the wonderful history of our town!

Top of the morning to everyone today!
Today we celebrated no snow, Barry's return, and Erwin's fête!
Peter B gave us an update about scholarships from Monday night, Wednesday night we meet again to do our second school. Arley W is gearing up with Super Reader again, Friday March 24 is Mt. Cheam, I believe Arley has people to help for that day! Stay tuned though, post- Spring Break busy is coming quickly and we will need all hands on deck. A reminder about the Golden Ears fundraiser on Saturday March 25 at the Maple Ridge legion, Dennis is looking for one more member to join them to make the festivity an interclub too- Talk to him if you are interested in attending.
Also the Regional Conference is April 8, please let me know if you are interested in attending, we have 3 thus far and we need to get our paperwork in soon!
Barry B. also gave a run down of his vacation- what a time, he brought back a fundraiser he came across, the picture is below- what a great idea! Does someone have a greenhouse?

Finally, our guest speaker today was Lucy Fraser from Chilliwack Hospice. She came with updates about the services Chilliwack Hospice provides our great community. There are partnerships growing with the First Nations communities, and those networks are proving to be beneficial. Of note, it's nice to hear that their services are being brought into the schools and that AD Rundle has started a grief and loss support group. They have also diversified their assistance programs, and offer cooking classes, bereavement support, grief counselling and suicide counselling to name a few. It was my pleasure to present a cheque to Lucy to help support the continuation of the services Chilliwack Hospice provides.

We wrapped up with Happy Bucks and best wishes for the best of week!
Don't forget to follow us on Instagram @fvekiwanis and give us a Like if you are on Facebook at Kiwanis Clubs of Chilliwack and Sardis!

"Keep your face always towards the sunshine- and the shadows will fall behind you."
~Walt Whitman

It feels like we are coming up on another busy season!
 Happy Pancake Day!
Shout out to all our Kiwanians headed to IHOP today! Thank you!

This morning we had Kyla from Sears Optical speak to us about the OneSight (Click the link for more details) program. "With your support, OneSight brings vision care to people across the globe by mobilizing eye care professionals, industry experts, volunteers, and partners. Our shared passion for giving the best care to every patient is what sets us apart. We hold ourselves to the highest standard of care no matter where in the world we are working. This means that patients receive comprehensive eye exams and new, top-quality eyewear that allows them to see, look, and feel their best. Because each community is different, we develop solutions customized to meet local needs. Patients then walk away empowered to give their best to families, employers and communities."
Personally, I was unaware of this program, and I am so thankful Kyla came to share her stories and experiences. We also learned that she collects old glasses for us so we can donate them back to the S.O.S program (Click the link for more details). This is a wonderful partnership! Thank you Kyla for your passion and for sharing your stories and program with us!
